Grassroots IX 17.09-30.10.2011
Bryndís Björnsdóttir // Helga Björg Gylfadóttir // Irene Ósk Bermudez // Klængur Gunnarsson // Kolbrún Ýr Einarsdóttir // Kristín Rúnarsdóttir // Sigríður Tulinius // Sigurður Atli Sigurðsson Curator: Kristjana Rós Guðjohnsen Exhibitions under the title Grassroots have been held annually in the Living Art Museum for more than a decade, with a few exceptions. These exhibitions are aimed specifically at giving emerging artists an opportunity to exhibit in an actively involved, professional setting. The grassroots exhibitions have generally given an overview of the direction of current Icelandic art and at the same time an image of what is to come in the local art scene.
The artists participating in Grassroots IX have been selected out of numerous applicants by a committee appointed by the board of the Living Art Museum. This jury consisted of Markús Þór Andrésson, independent curator, Kristín Dagmar Jóhannsdóttir, curator and project manager at the Reykjavík Art Museum and Kristjana Rós Guðjohnsen, artist and independent project manager and curator. Kristjana was further appointed as the curator of this year’s grassroots exhibition.
Grassroots IX will hold works of eight artists with various artistic backgrounds. In addition to exhibition experience, they have been active in writing and publishing art related material and have touched down in various cross-disciplinary artistic undertakings. Their approach varies from taking a political stand to a more contemplated formalistic method or a playful poetic point of view.
In relation to the exhibition the museum will launch a publication containing thoughts and images from the artists, a prefix from the curator and an article by the philosopher Davíð Kristinsson. |
