TEIKN 28.01.-11.03.2012 On Saturday January 28 opens at the Living Art Museum the exhibition Teikn with works by Myriam Bat-Yosef and Jóhanna Kristbjörg Sigurđardóttir. Myriam, or María Jósepsdóttir, is a citizen of Iceland. She was born in Berlin in 1931, but currently resides in Paris, France, where she also studied. Myriam's rich and matured practice now spans over 70 years, and her work has been exhibited widely. No stranger to the Icelandic art scene, she exhibited here frequently from the 1950's to the 1990´s. At the Living Art Museum Myriam sets forth a combination of new and older works from local collections, both public and private. The work; paintings, painted objects, murals, drawings and videos of performances present a continuation of her subject matter; nature, manifestations of gender, inception, birth and life, decay and death. Jóhanna Kristbjörg was born in 1982 in Reykjavík where she works and lives. At the Living Art Museum she shows an installation consisting of paintings, two videos and a performance, that together form a trilogy. Johanna’s works often consist of a combination of these elements. She composes arrangements dealing with society and her close environment. She often creates a role for herself and uses an intuition-based approach while investigating the deeper meaning of her works. Jóhanna was recently awarded the Listasjóđur Dungal art price for emerging artists. Myriam’s and Johanna’s works are brought together in this exhibition because of the similar thread that can be detected in their practice despite the age difference between the two artists. Both use paintings, videos and performances to mediate the interrelations of what cannot be expressed with words. They have both developed an artistic language that in form and colour outline a strong symbolism with a religious, even supernatural appearance. A central element in both their works is emphasis on unrestrained flow of ideas that can be traced back to symbolism and surrealism. Teikn is sponsored by Hlađvarpinn and the City of Reykjavík, as well as with help from The Icelandic Centre of Art.
