Historical spiritual vibration — a space traveling program for healing
During the 23rd of April Herring, Iron, Gunpowder, Humans and Sugar (HIGHS) will have a ceremony in three acts to launch their space travel program. The ceremonies spring from memories beyond our time zone. A healing practice for the space race where they bring objects that witness historical trauma into the future and carry it into a next dimension. An old trading ship becomes a spaceship, saltfish blends with cane sugar into a monument for repairing historical hurt. A model of a spiritual vibrating space vessel is sent into the sky where it will sail with the spirits to shape a new destiny.
Who feels it knows it, patterns repeating themselves through the centenaries. What was once broken still hurts the newborn. Generational trauma, historical trauma, post traumatic slave syndrome brakes soft skin. We carry the memories of the fallen in our hearts, in the other dimensions they are still alive. They travel in the vessels that harbor the souls of the ancestors. Acknowledge your privileges and allow the healing, close your eyes and see the star ship shining. Rest in the belly of the beast, slumber in the darkness among the glistering fires. The new planet will set us free.
Performance schedule:
12.00—15.00: Act one – Transformation of a model of a 1800 century trading ship into a spaceship for healing travels in the future.
16.00—17.00: Act two- Sugar and saltfish ceremony next to terrariums with ackee.
22.00—22.30: Act three- Spaceship launch ceremony of HIGHS at the harbor.
Herring, Iron, Gunpowder, Humans & Sugar (HIGHS)-Collective visits places that were linked to the triangular trade the economical system behind the transatlantic slave trade. At the historical places they make performance with storytelling and dance together with objects consisting of the material that were extracted, manufacturer and exportered by this places. In the pro- cess, Whyte & Zettergren want to activate the sites and materials in a search for a method to process historical trauma and to create discussions about memory, heritage and responsibility. HIGHS is run by the Jamaican dancer Olando Whyte and the Swedish artist Rut Karin Zettergren since 2017.
The performance is apart of IMMUNE/ÓNÆM research project and exhibition currently displayed at the Living Art Museum, up until 1st of May
IMMUNE / ÓNÆM is the result of a two-year research and collaboration project between 11 international artists, designers, scholars and curators, who in their work deal with colonization, queer ecosystems, extractive capitalism and nationalism based on a common starting point: Eggert Ólafsson and Bjarni Pálsson's Travels in Iceland (1775) and the image of nature drawn in their story.
The group of participants comes from various backgrounds and one of the project's goals is to use Iceland, this isolated island and ecosystem, as a platform to reflect on political, social and economic aspects of nature.
